Vanuatu is embracing coconut oil as a key to its clean energy future - reinvigorating a time-tested, locally sourced fuel that could dramatically reduce reliance on imported diesel. By tapping into the abundant coconut harvests across its islands, the country is not only cutting carbon emissions but also empowering communities to take charge of their energy needs.
Vanuatu is reigniting its commitment to renewable energy by scaling up crude coconut oil (CNO) production, aiming for 16 million liters annually by 2030—enough to replace much of its imported diesel. Once a staple in the country’s energy mix, CNO is being revived through upgraded mills, new technology, and a partnership with Vanuatu Basket. Advocates like John Tonner highlight that the infrastructure already exists and the environmental benefits are undeniable: coconut oil is stable, efficient, and significantly cleaner than fossil fuels. With proven past use and abundant supply across all 83 islands, coconut oil is being positioned as Vanuatu’s “sleeping giant” of sustainable energy.
