PRV, standing for Plantations Réunies de Vanuatu — meaning “United Plantations of Vanuatu” — is the largest coconut plantation in Vanuatu by total land mass. PRV’s lands are collectively expansive, making it a cornerstone of Vanuatu’s agricultural landscape for Cattle, Cocoa and Copra production.
The legacy of PRV is deeply intertwined with the history of Vanuatu itself. Originally established during the French colonial period, the plantation has continued to evolve through the decades. Following independence, PRV maintained a significant presence and adapted to changing times, preserving its heritage in coconut cultivation while also diversifying into Cocoa and Cattle farming.
While coconut cultivation remains at the heart of PRV, the plantation has also diversified into cocoa production and cattle farming. One important issue in cattle operations was identified soon after the recent purchase of the PRV farm: all cattle in Vanuatu transported inter island must be transported live due to strict regulations on inter-island movement of processed beef.
In the past, cattle were loaded directly onto a landing craft, a practice that often caused stress or even injury to the animals. PRV’s management quickly recognized the need for a safer and more humane solution. To address this, PRV has introduced the use of “zootainers” — specialized containers designed for the secure and humane transport of live cattle. This modern approach represents a major improvement over older methods, ensuring animal welfare while meeting regulatory requirements.
PRV are committed to bring this modern approach to not only cattle but also introducing modern dryer and other equipment to the farm to showcase improvements in Cattle, Copra and Cocoa processes.
Environmental stewardship is also a priority for PRV. To combat invasive “Pico” weed plants that threaten the productivity of the paddocks, PRV has partnered with the Vanuatu Department of Biosecurity and Agriculture, who are conducting a pilot program of introducing a beneficial beetle species to combat the weed. This natural predator has helped control the weed spread, protecting the health of the plantation lands. Furthermore, recognising the need to rejuvenate overgrown paddocks, PRV has invested in mulching services to clear areas overtaken by bush, ensuring the land remains fertile and productive for the future.
Beyond agriculture, PRV serves its community with a convenient local one-stop shop. Stocked with clothing, pantry essentials, frozen foods, hardware, homeware, baby items & more, the store supports the daily needs of workers and locals alike.
PRV’s name — Plantations Réunies de Vanuatu — truly reflects the spirit of unity and collective strength. Through innovation, respect for the environment, and a commitment to preserving Vanuatu’s agricultural heritage, PRV continues to be a vital and respected name in the country’s farming sector, uniting tradition and progress across its vast lands.
