10 September 2025 – The first section of the coconut nursery project has been successfully completed, with 1,081 coconuts now buried and ready to sprout. The team has already begun preparing the second area to continue the planting, continuing momentum in this long-term agricultural initiative.
A project spokesperson commented on the progress:
“The team did well preparing the second area yesterday. They’ll finish this morning and start planting coconuts there after lunch. We had a small downpour of rain early this morning which will really assist in the shooting of the coconuts. Overall, the nursery is coming along really well.”
This nursery forms part of PRV and Vanuatu Basket’s five-year replanting strategy, aligned with the National Coconut Strategy (2016–2026), which aims to rejuvenate old plantations, strengthen food security, and increase economic prosperity. With CRB beetle restrictions limiting the movement of seed nuts between islands, establishing this local nursery ensures a secure and sustainable supply of seedlings for Malekula’s agricultural future.
