CRB Response & Plantation Recovery

Since its detection in 2019 on Efate Island, the invasive Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) has posed a serious threat to Vanuatu’s coconut industry. The beetle, known for burrowing into the crowns of coconut palms and destroying young coconut plants, has caused widespread damage across affected islands.

Coconut cultivation contributes significantly to Vanuatu’s GDP. In response to the CRB, Biosecurity Vanuatu, in collaboration with regional partners, initiated containment and eradication efforts including mass trapping and public awareness campaigns.

However, Malekula Island remains free of CRB infestation, and its plantations continue to thrive. To protect and strengthen coconut production nationwide, a new coconut nursery has been established at the PRV Plantations on Malekula. This initiative supports replanting efforts and promotes long-term sustainability of coconut farming across Vanuatu.
